Do u really need declawing ur pet cats
The General Veterinary Clinic, Bangalore
Do you really need to declawyour cat?
May be We can think twice! Cats are authors; they write. their prose is cat scratch
— literally. They scratch to express excitement and pleasure. They scratch to leave
messages, both visual and aromatic(cats’ paws have scent glands). Cats also scratch
to remove the worn-out sheaths
from their claws and to stretch theirmuscles and spine.

It’s important to understand that cats must scratch. It’s a normal, important feline behavior. if its ur furnitures getting the damage It’s where they leave their marks that may be a problem.
The decision to declaw is yours, Modern veterinar
y medicine can provide adequate pain relief and accomplish a successful surgery. But do you really need to declaw your cat?
Kittens can be easily taught to scratch in all the “right” places,
since you’re working with a clean slate. Even cats accustomed
to borrowing furniture as a scratcher can be retrained. All you
need to do is simultaneously discourage your cat from scratching
inappropriate objects while you encourage scratching on
scratching posts.
Discourage the cat by using double-sided tape or a manufactured
product that presents a sticky surface on areas that you don’t want
scratched (cats don’t like sticky stuff on their paws). For large areas
or objects like sofas, you can drape carpet runners or car mats
(nubby side up) over them.

@dr Premal: yes there is such a thing. but it isnt the scratch that is important, it seems to be Chlamydia (others say B henselae, B quintana orStaphylococcus )that causes it and the cats claws are just a vehicle. not verry common with ind
oor cats, this can occur durring fall or winter (mainly) and it can evolve as a pruriginous, pustulous, localized affect or even more causing generalized adenopathy, fever, meningitis, nausea, anorexia, septicemia, coma....
the treatment is simple, with common antibiotics like doxiciclyn, but is is advised to do cultures.

@dr Swarup: it is true in europe it is prohibited along with every " embelishment (cosmetic) surgery" and we like it that way

I had to teach my vet about catnip, he had never heard of it. So I took the packet, open it and show it to him. I put some in the Scratcher so he could see my cats playing and rolling in the catnip.

Of course here in Delhi we find only the dry kind, they still don't import the seeds for us to sprout, but doesn't matter, cats like the dry catnip just the same.

Once after one of my cats died, Tigu her brother became so sad and depressed that he stopped eating, so I got a lot of catnip to cheer him up and many cans of tuna fish to eat and he came out of depression. Cats are knwon to die out of sadness. But not my cats!!!! I know exactly what to do to cheer them up :-)
